 CLAY BAR. WHAT IS IT? WHAT CAN IT DO?

You might of heard of it. It is fairly new to the detail industry. So what is it? It’s what it sounds like, a piece of clay about the size of a bar of soap. So what does it do? Cleans the paint and clear coat of your vehicle by removing bug residue, tar, and paint contamination that is not removed by regular washing and polishing. How does it work? First you lubricate the clay bar and the area you want to start with. Next you rub the clay bar on the surface you’re starting with moving the clay back and forth while applying medium pressure. More lubricant is applied if needed until the clay bar moves smoothly across the paint and any visible contaminants have been removed. You then move on to the next surface until every inch of the vehicle’s paint has been cleaned. After the entire car has been clay barred, the  wax is applied. How important is clay bar? Any paint         contamination that is on the paint will over time lead to rusting. Where does paint contamination come from? There are three places paint contamination comes from.

Rail Dust: produced from the friction of train wheels against tracks. Most new vehicles (because they are transported by rail before they get to the dealership) already have paint contamination before they are sold.
Brake Dust: produced form the friction of brake pads  rubbing against the rotor. Both rail dust and brake dust create tiny particles of bare metal that are released into the air.
Industrial fallout: another word for pollution. Does my car need a clay bar treatment? Simply run your hand down the side of your vehicle or across the hood. Your hand should slide smoothly across the paint. If you feel any resistance or small bumps (which are paint contamination) then you could probably benefit from a clay bar treatment.
